Pogues - Rocky Road to Dublin

It was in merry month of June, from me home I started,
left the girls in june, nearly broken-hearted,
saluted good bye to their dear sweet hearted mother,
drank a pint of beer,me beat the tears and smoother'd'em.
off to reap the corn, leave where I was born.
Cut a stout black-thorn to banish ghost and goblin;
got me of bran new brogues, rattled o'er the bogs,
frightened all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin.

(Chorus)
One two three four five,
hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
and all the way to Dublin, whack-fol-la-de-da !

In Mullingar, that night, I rested tired and weary.
Up in the morning started leaving bright and early
had a cup of the pure, leave me helpless thinking
that's paddy cure, whenever down just drink.
To see the lassies smile, laughing all the while
At me curious style, will set my heart a-bubbling.
axe me was for hire, wages I required.
til I was sick and tired of the rocky road to Dublin.

In Dublin next arrived, I thought it was a pity
to be so soon deprived of view of that fine city;
when I took a stroll, all among the quality,
bundle it was stolen in a neat locality.
Something crossed me mind, when, I look behind
a bundle could not find upon me stick a-wobbling.
Asking for the rogue, o me Connaught brogue
wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin.

From there I got away, me spirits never failing,
landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing,
captain at me roared, that no more of paddy,
when I jumped on board, a cabin found for Paddy.
Down among the pigs, played some rummy rigs,
danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling.
wound up Holyhead, wished that I was dead,
the fact was far too sad of the rocky road to Dublin.

The boys in Liverpool, when ship we landed,
called meself a fool, and could no longer stand it;
blood began to boil, and for I was losing
dear old Erin's Isle, and they all began abusing.
"Hurrah!" me shillelagh she lay in the Ireland bay
go and boys and by were saw a one a hobble;
when with a loud "hurrah !" joined me in the fray,
helped me clear the way for the rocky road to Dublin.
