2009 marks the 20th Annual Billtown Blues Festival, and to celebrate this wonderful central Pennsylvania ritual, Franco's Lounge has cooked up a very special treat. From the First Annual Billtown Blues Festival in June 1990, featuring the late great Tanya Brown as Queen Bee & The Blue Hornet Band in their first song together for the evening. From the archives of Fred Daniele at Franco's Lounge and a little help from local artist and filmmaker Lonnie Wilcox. Camera - Martin Gilbody. Enjoy! Franco's Lounge, Restaurant & Music Club Celebrating 25 Years...so far. 12 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, PA 17701 570-327-1840

  • To bsharporflat,

I was at PSU from 85-89. Saw you guys many, many times at the Skeller. You may know my friend, Kirk O. I won't put his full last name. Thanks for many awesome evenings. You guys were great togther. Cafe, and as someone mentioned, the St Pats day thing at the Brickhouse. god, what memories. Thanks.

  • R.I.P. Ms. Brown. I have all (I believe her cd's with the Blue Hornets). I came across the band during Musikfest in Bethlehem and was blown away. I would talk to the band during the breaks. They were the highlight of Musikfest to me and my buddies. Our world has lost a blues croner indeed. I'm quite saddened to hear of her passing.

  • Thanks for posting. Brings back many memories.

  • I have randomly come across this video and I am truly amazed at her talent.

  • I played sax for Queen Bee +BHB around '87-'89. Was housemate with Tonya for a while. She was an artistic, tasteful blues singer, but when she really let loose it uplifted and blew you away, even her for her bandmates. Thanks for letting me see and hear Tonya again. Hi and best wishes to Blue Hornets Mark and Cindy, Rich and Bill if you are reading this.- Lee

  • Tanya was a fantastic person and in '85 or so, becoming well known in the music world in S.C. She frequented the Diner and I had lots of quiet conversations with her - she was so soft spoken that no one would have imagined she had a voice like she did. And the most vivid recollection is her ever-present notebook. Reading that she had died just shocked me - I'm afraid we really lost someone with explosive potential, and I have to wonder what more years would have given us.

  • Oh, how I miss this band. Traveled from the Harrisburg area to State College many times to see them, and would get out when they played in my area. Played a gig or two with them. Miss Brown, you left us far too soon.

  • Yep, I was reading my Penn Stater too! Thanks so much for posting this. I can still remember the first time I saw Queen Been. I'm pretty sure it was on at a mid-day show, St. Pat's day 1989 at the Brickhouse... after friends, Bonnie and Naomi enticed me to ditch classes and go bar hopping with them that day. Good times. Good friends. Good memories. Great band. So sorry to hear of Tonya Bowne's passing; rest her soul.

  • Awesome band, and lots of great memories..but they didn't bring Buddy Guy or Gatemouth to State College. That was part of the AXP Blues Festival at the VFW. I don't know about Pinetop, he was never part of the festival line up.

  • Just got my Penn Stater too -- Queen Bee, Skellar, Cafe.... -- Great memories. Thanks for posting.
