A symphony of bells

23rd April 07, for one hour only, a cacophony of bells rang out across the city from different locations to mark the 800th anniversary of Liverpool.
The event, including the ominous chimes of composer Llorenc Barber atop the Philharmonic hall, were captured on a rain drenched St Georges day using 4 cameras spread across the city. If you're lucky you will catch sight of a specter.

What a great piece.... and a very good idea to have it in B&W.

I attended Barber's concert for Innsbruck in 1993, I think there were 23 churches at work. It was extraordinary, a very "full" sound, which also had to do with Innsbruck's being wedged between high mountains. He had stuck the Blue Danube in there somewhere as a motif. I was actually reporting on the Barber is also an enchanting person, extremely committed to his bells!

I didn't get to have a conversation with him unfortunately, But his presence was intriguing and he was very interesting to watch & film

Interesting comment. How do you come to that conclusion. Do you mean the actual bells are Russian or the style of ringing?

The main bells you can hear are from Liverpool Metropolitan cathedral, Liverpool Anglican and Our Lady & St Nicholas. There was also some 'car wheel rim' percussion, and of course Llorenc Barber's hand bells

Nice link. Very similar tone & style of ringing. Maybe Barber has been influenced by the Russian orthodox bells

A really lovely piece. Very atmospheric, and the ten minutes flew by. (BRASSEYE, I was alerted to this link for the same reason you comment on it, but I'm afraid it is simply a streak of rain on the lens and the camera being moved slightly, with the lo-res of YouTube 'adding' the rest).

thanks for lovely comment. Perhaps you are right as it was very wet and lens caught some drops. Though are we looking at the same incident? The scene in the graveyard half way through where something/someone appears to slip between a gravestone and the tree. It doesn't look like rain but more like an over-sized transparent carrier bag drifting in the wind. Perhaps I have just answered my own question.

theese are russian orthodox bells. Dont know why they are in liverpool. not like English ringing
