The Renegade Platoon was on a sweep to locate IED's planted in roads around Baqubah, Iraq, in late February, 2005. Michael Yon's video camera was rolling and captured one method for locating bombs emplanted in roads. This video excerpt is part of a dispatch entitled "Renegade Platoon being hit by IED" and it is best understood within the context of that dispatch.Read the dispatch here: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/wp/video-renegade-platoon-being-hit-by-ied.htm
If it were initiated by a command wire or cellphone the insurgents would need to be able to see it. But it could also be victim-initiated, by Passive Infra-Red sensor, pressure plate, etc.

when an IED like that goes off, doesn't it usually mean there's some insurgent nearby watching?
