i think all he's saying is that we need to distort our reality in one way or another to deal with it. it could be through religious fundamentalism, drug use, celebrity obsession, whatever. we have harnessed this culture of dilution wherein we would rather live in comfortable ignorance than face our problems. additionally, i would love to hear about elliot and wayne coyne hanging out.

"A distorted reality" = chemical respite; "a necessity to be free"= required to escape ones demons

Do I hear some Beatles vocal harmonies?
-
can someone explain the title "a distorted realitit is a necessity to be free"

Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips is the one who came up with the phraze "A distorted reality is now a necessity to be free" Steven Drozd from the Lips also did drums on "Coast to Coast" From this album...the story of them all together is rock and roll history for those that care to hear...makes it even sadder really.

@Theonewhoclimbs28 It looks like G#, 4th fret , he probably has a capo in the 4th fret and play it in E (relative). Pretty simple song, cool arrangement. thanks..

At 0:58 his voice harmonies when he says " you disappoint me, you people raking in on the world! I get the biggest goosebumps and kind of teary eyed. It's just that it is so fucking beautiful and powerful. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it, it still happens every time. I wish I could create something that made people feel as good as his songs make me feel!!!
