Denver Botanic Gardens Herbarium of Fungi (i.e. Mycological Herbarium) was re-named the Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi to honor its founder, Dr. D.H. "Sam" Mitchel on Oct. 15, 2009. This was done in association with the establishment of an endowment also named for Sam, to support scientific use of the collection, including internships, guest curators, equipment, and publications. This video was shown at both the Volunteers Recognition Luncheon (to acknowledge the fact that he began as a volunteer) and at the official dedication of the Herbarium. It chronicles how Dr. Mitchel, a medical doctor, became interested in mushrooms and went on to found both the Herbarium and the Colorado Mycological Society.
Dr. Mitchel was an important figure; this naming will help insure he is never forgotten.
