Apollo Granforte (1886-1975) was a magnificient Italian baritone with one of the greatest timbres any baritone has ever had. His complete recordings of Otello and Andrea Chenier are of remarkably high quality for their time and definitely worth having. This Prologue was recorded in 1927.

  • Granforte was a true dramatic baritone, as opposed to our ubiquitous lyrics today. I'm NOT denigrating lyric baritones; such was my fach during my performing days;). And I admire Hampson, Keenlyside, Allen, Quilico, Gunn, Finley, Sharp etc., when they aren't trying to convince us that they are Verdians or Wagnerians. But the richness, darkness and sheer heft that Granforte exemplifies here are nowhere apparent among those guys or any other contemporary baritones, alas:) --

  • Who has forgotten Granforte? Everyone who knows anything about baritones at all, knows about him. Who could forget his Zaza? (Cascart)

  • Bravo Granforte, tecnica solida che gli consentiva un canto a tutto tondo.Avercelo ora (2011) ci sarebbe da leccarsi le dita.

  • His pupil Ricardo Ledesma became one of the greatest tenors. Look for him on youtube

  • remarkable sound for 1927 Sounds as if this was recorded in an auditorium in the 1960s- On certain notes he reminds me of Merrill with a little Bastianini and McNeil thrown in.- I had heard of him but this my first listening - Nice rich voice -very well focused- Aria lags in pace a bit for my taste

  • UNBEATABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Forgotten?" Actually, Granforte has an outstanding reputation. He more than lives up to it here! Not only a rich, powerful voice, but an elegant, musical one! He sings with genuine feeling, without artificial sobs or exaggeration. If only more baritones were singing this way today!

  • Not only is this one of the most amazing baritone sounds of all time, but he really inhabits the music - sings every word full of meaning - wonderfully musical singer, and what a SOUND!

  • Perfetto, voce di un volume che oggi non si trova più e stile modernissimo

  • Amazing voice. His tone sounds so easy and powerful. He was the teacher of Jesus Quinones Ledesma, dramatic tenor.

  • What a delightful surprise!

    Belissimo!

    Reminds me of Ruffo...
