I started the trek home, ready to find my can to kick. Sometimes that poor innocent can would get all of my anger for the day. I could see the thorn bush coming into sight when I heard unfamiliar footsteps -- running footsteps, until finally someone caught hold of my arm.
'Hey!' It was the same boy from Chemistry -- Daniel. I turned away from him, and started walking, I looked at the bush and I past it, I heard his footsteps as he caught up with me. 'Not very talkative are you?' i turned to look at him and gave him the same weak smile I gave everyone that tried to talk to me. 'Wait, you're not mute are you?' he had said suddenly looking frightened. In that moment, I knew he was going to be important to me -- but just remember, like I said, I had no friends. He was surely important, he was there for me, but I couldn't class him as my friend -- I hadn't known him that long.
Walking in silence I was used to, but walking in silence with another person, that's a different story.
'So, what's your name?' he had asked -- this was just the beginning. I turned to him and hoped something -- anything would escape my lips this time.
'Toni,' I had crackled out.
'Oh jeez, are you okay? I mean, you didn't have to talk if you're got something wrong with your throat and all,' he rambled out, he looked startled, like a deer getting caught in headlights. He stopped where he had been walking.
'It's fine,' I whispered, 'I'll be fine tomorrow,' I smiled at him -- the first of many lies, but he never knew, not then anyway. He had walked the whole way back with me, I was in silence listening to his stories about him and his friends in California -- they were interesting, but I had my own troubles. We stood at the bottom of my path, I listened to the end of the story about his friend nearly being eaten alive by a shark when my front door was rattled and finally pulled open in desperation.
'TONI! You're needed at the hospital, Anna's not looking good today,' my mum had called out.
'Anna?' He'd questioned, I had no time to answer, I was quickly being pulled away and put into the backseat of the car, door slamming shut in his face, I felt bad -- that was the first day I'd ever left someone in question, the first day someone had taken an interest and I'd left them. I looked through the dirty car window at his body, he just stood there dumbfounded. I knew I wouldn't be in school tomorrow, but that had been a good thing -- it meant I didn't have to explain so soon, but it also meant more pain to come, and if she was as bad as my mother was making out, agony and torture. No surgeon, doctor or nurse would stop if I was in pain -- noone cared. As long as they had the 'signed' contract they didn't care -- they did their jobs.
I laid in the bed next to my sister, laying on my side as the nurse took a bone marrow sample from my spine, I lay looking at her while I winced in pain, the needle thrust in so far to get what she desperately needed. A tear escaped my eye as I knew the needle had moved into the wrong place -- this would be costly, for my sister and myself, but who would everyone think about first?
