The World Parrot Refuge, at Coombs BC, Canada, deals with a growing number of previously-owned pet parrots. They are produced as lucrative "products" by the pet industry and sold to unsuspecting people who discover that parrots are hard to keep as pets and generally do not do well in captivity.

I understand what you are needing to do for ill cared for birbs but I do not agree that "Parrots don't make good pets."

Ill educated people do not make good parrot keepers.

A parrot is not to be chosen as a pet, rather one chooses a parrot as an adopted family member.

    - I am sure that you love and care for parrots very deeply - as we do. You are probably not the "average" pet parrot owner, but the exceptional person who knows how huge the committment is (as you mentioned adoption). Unhappily, none of us can give parrats dozens and dozens of relationships to replace the flock. Nor can we give them acres of space to fly around. Nor can we give them mates and environments to reproduce (ethically). .. the list goes on

    Thanks for visiting!

I also wanted to add that no wild caught parrots have been legally imported into the USA since 1992 with the passage of the wild bird act and CITES.

You certainly provide a very nice environment for the birds under your care. Still, I wanted to inform the public that there other alternatives or approaches to rescuing pet birds. Also, not every bird out there comes from an abusive home or is negleted or ill cared for. People's lives change and sometimes they want to go a different direction. The pet bird owners that I have met have always provided the best of care and diet for their birds.

This allows the shelter to free up space and to operate more efficiently with the limited resources it has. In the end more birds are taken in and adopted out to good caring responsible homes than otherwise would be possible.

The shelter tries to rehome every bird that it gets, so far the shelter has not had a shortage of people who are willing to adopt a bird.

The shelter I adopted him from said the previous owner took very good care of the bird but after ten years wanted to travel more. So he placed the bird with the shelter so that they could find a responsible new owner who could properly care for the bird.

Very nice video. Though I disagree with you that parrots do not or cannot make good pets. I happen to own an amazon that I adopted from a shelter. The previous owner owned the bird for several years and took very good care of the bird before placing it in a bird rescue that rehomes parrots. The bird was not wild caught but raised domestically from parents that were also bred and raised in the USA and not wild caught. He is a double yellow headed amazon who is very well adjusted and friendly

Can't some of these birds be adopted out or placed in new homes if their previous owners are no longer able to care for them for whatever reason?

To jsou velmi hezcí ptáci - these are very pretty birds. Já žádného papouška nemám, ale můj kamarád má hezkého, velkého, barevného - I do not have any parrot, but my friend has a nice, big, color.
