The World Parrot Refuge, at Coombs BC, Canada, deals with a growing number of previously-owned pet parrots. They are produced as lucrative "products" by the pet industry and sold to unsuspecting people who discover that parrots are hard to keep as pets and generally do not do well in captivity.

  • I understand what you are needing to do for ill cared for birbs but I do not agree that "Parrots don't make good pets."

Ill educated people do not make good parrot keepers.

A parrot is not to be chosen as a pet, rather one chooses a parrot as an adopted family member.

  • @onmilo - I am sure that you love and care for parrots very deeply - as we do. You are probably not the "average" pet parrot owner, but the exceptional person who knows how huge the committment is (as you mentioned adoption). Unhappily, none of us can give parrats dozens and dozens of relationships to replace the flock. Nor can we give them acres of space to fly around. Nor can we give them mates and environments to reproduce (ethically). .. the list goes on

    Thanks for visiting!

  • where is it located?

  • If parrots don't make good pets, what about dogs?

Yeah i know that bird can bite really hard, but what about big dogs?

They can even kill humans if they want to, but the same as birds. They do what they feel like. I agree that you should have education to own a parrot. But it is the same as a dog.

  • I'm volunteer at a dutch organisation in which we provide information about parrots. (that they don't make good pets, etc.)

I have two clipped parrots. Their condition is good. They don't need to fly. In the wild, they only fly for food and to flee. In my home, they get food twice a day (pellet) and they go outside every day. They don't need to flee (and it's misbehaviour) My birds are in great condition. I think it's more important they get their daily portion of sunlight.

  • A I sit here with my parrot sat on my head, I cr y at what a beautiful job you are doing.Thank you for caring for them.
