Vanguard on China's Uighurs

This week an article came out reporting on the U.S. Supreme Court considering whether judges have the power to release Guantanamo Bay detainees into the United States if they have been deemed not to be "enemy combatants."

A case involving 220 Chinese Muslims known as Uighurs will now come before the U.S. Supreme Court to see if they have the right to leave Guantanamo Bay and enter the U.S.

Vanguard's Laura Ling produced an episode of Vanguard called "China's Wild West" exploring the Uighur situation in China. This is a segment from that episode in which Laura interviews a Uighur to discuss the Uighur's plight and struggles.

@sunnuri715 Is there anywhere else outside China, where Uyghur language is written in its original beautiful form? Take a look at your Turkic neighbors and Mongolia, see how their beautiful languages were substituted by Cyrillic, and you are complaining your language is disappearing?

Why Uighurs are taught Putonghua and Uighur in China. It is to ensure that they aren't left out of China's development, while keeping true to their cultural roots. Who is trying to eliminate Uighur?

@Thak11 Well,i m a uyghur girls,i can speak my mother tounge and mandarin,japanese,english and bla bla bla.u r right,it's wonderfull if we learn many language and communicate with ppl from differenc countries and cultures,but,does it means let our kids don't learn thier mother toungue from primary school but learn mandarin chinese?no!the labguage is a part of an ethnic's culture,if ur tounge dispappear,then no this ethnic in this world!maybe u don't know about china,i will expalin u.....

video shows the perfect example of chinese system. in classroom, the standard language is mandarin, but you can speak what ever language after the class is over. after 60 years of mandarin education, all regions of china still maintain their individual dialects

CHAUVINISTIC PRESSURE is everywhere and Soviet Union was not exception. Simply you should grow up as person in order to use it as incentive to your development. Of course, it is struggle and not so easy....
