In Ukraine the Catholic Church has been called the Catacomb Church, and for very good reason. Under Soviet suppression, over 1,400 priests and 800 nuns were arrested and sent to Siberian labor camps.
In the town of Markova, villagers defied authorities and conducted religious services. There were many threats, many shows of force in the ongoing intimidation of the Markova parishioners. Then one night in 1959 a suspected communist zealot burnt the church to the ground. The story of Markovas' Church was repeated many times in the villages across Ukraine.
This documentary is about a miracle, the survival of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic church after years of suppression during the Soviet regime. It is also the story of those Canadian-Ukrainians who were determined that the faith of their forefathers, the faith that meant so much to them, would flourish.
