What have you got your guitar tuned in? Cuz it looks like when you play DGCF that you start the D on the 5th fret of 6th string... which in standard tuning is A...

and actually, you can, it's just a lot more difficult to establish a tonal center with a half diminished chord.
and technically, true, 100% modal playing in its real original form doesnt concern tonal playing, but modal playing.

only the locrian mode has a tritone in the root triad.

he didn't say phrygian because no one uses phrygian. Can't establish tonal center when the 1 triad has a tritone :O
