Baby penguin crawls over my lap

One of the San Francisco Zoo's baby penguins (hatched in late May) comes to investigate during socialization hour, hopping into and out of my lap.

@lizbabytweet Oh, I pet them plenty. But you don't want to overstimulate them or force interaction. Check out my video "Baby penguins in my lap" to see lots of petting, to the point where one of them fell asleep.

Oh, they get PLENTY of stimulation. This is part of the "Fish School" program, where they have volunteers socialize them for several hours a day. That can include blowing bubbles or other games, in addition to the fascination people provide. In fact, keepers are careful not to have the chicks get overstimulated and train the volunteers in proper interaction. And being babies, they do sleep a lot, too.
