This track was recorded circa 1927 when Bessie was singing with Fletcher Henderson in New York. She is accompanied by some members of his orchestra on this recording session, including Joe Smith cor. Buster Bailey clt. and Jim Harrison tmb. This is a rendition of one of the 'bread and butter' numbers that the band performed for the mass audiences of the day; but just listen to the way Bessie puts her mark on it!
The photograph was taken in 1936, before her fatal traffic accident in 1937.

  • If she was still alive, she'd put the pop divas to shame.

  • eu amo as maoires de todos os tempoa bessie smth etta james saravough e elis reigina não deixarei janis joplin.

  • If you listen carefully, Bessie sings hot time in old town which are the original lyrics. At some point in time, "the" has been added to old town. I must admit it's hard to catch the difference.

  • Like the totally most awesome cover of this song was by Leon Redbone. He's like the most totally awesome.

  • @sharonanony I agree with you all the way. Bessie Smith was Majestic in everything she did. A powerful beautiful lady, tough living,Great voice, to me the best blues singer of all time. This track is a real swinger,I would compare this to another of my all time greats Billie Holiday singing ,My mothers son in law.

  • @cbrun67176 She probably would`ve smacked you one for calling her ugly. She was majestic, in all ways one of the true legends of any music.

  • Widershins: She might have been a lot of things that a lot of so called up standing people would frown on, but that just made her more beautiful and talented, yes what a wonderful woman.
