This may look rigid if one is used to watching modern dressage. This horse is in a much higher state of collection than we ever see now, even in the Olympics. Note that M. Oliveira rode this entire segment with the reins in one hand, and the horse always had the correct flexion of his neck with the poll being the highest point. Modern dressage horses almost always have their 2nd and 3rd vertebrae as the highest point, which will not produce true collection, but have the horse on the forehand.

Maria, This IS classical dressage and what, in my opinion, we should all strive for. The horse is relaxed and free to move and is holding itself in frame willing and happily because it is being asked to, not forced to. If you trainer does not know who Oliveria is, I fear you might be better served finding a different trainer.

One more thing... I tried to lean to make the turns or when making the turns like Nuno, but my horse, every time would do a flying change! Then I was said and corrected when I stayed straight on top of the horse.... Was it that I was doing it wrong or that the horse was trained wrong?

@mariafzankl, I dont think there's anything wrong with aspiring to this at all. The horse was working at all times in a balanced manner, attentive to his rider. The rider is in turn staying consistent, and look how quiet his cueing is- there's no big overcue to get a small change.. To me, this is far more pleasing than modern dressage which tends to be bridle bridle overbend leg leg leg yank kick spur. There are few dressage riders who ride even close to this quietly.

I am a beginner but wish to ride like this!!!!! I showed it to my instructor that said it was terrible from the point of view of the horse, that the horse was too rigid, did not do the right and beautiful bending.... can somebody comment on this? I am wayyy to much of a beginner to be able to respond to this.... I know who Oliveira is, she doesn't and although she said that I really wish i could ride like him!
