December 24th 1968

In 1968 the three man crew of Apollo 8 became the first humans in history to orbit the moon. Their hastily-planned mission saw them enter lunar orbit on Christmas Eve after a three day voyage from earth. In one a of a number of scheduled live TV broadcasts from the spacecrafts, the crew pointed their black and white camera at the lunar horizon and read the first ten verses of the Bible's book of Genesis.

The broadcast was the most watched in TV history at that point, and while popular with many did lead to a lawsuit aimed at NASA by someone who felt a government agency had no place condoning a Christian message. From then on NASA took pains to avoid any overtly religious references in ship-to-Earth broadcasts.

All major US networks carried the broadcast.
