The first TAC commercial answered the brief to upset, outrage and appal Victorian drivers. The story of a young drunk driver who seriously injures his girlfriend and is confronted at the hospital by her angry parents, sets the realistic, documentary style that has been the hallmark of TAC communications ever since.
Nurse Karen Warnecke uttered the immortal words If you drink, then drive, youre a bloody idiot for the first time in a corridor at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

@OneManArmBand The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Victoria doesn't mess around. They've been broadcasting ads like this for the last twenty-three years, and the reduction in road statistics (halved since 1989, when these ads first aired) is proof that a powerful ad campaign can have an impact.

What disturbs me about this is that the bloke knows he's unable to control his own movements. What makes him think he can control the damn car? He drinks, he drives; He's a bloody idiot!
