This is a tribute to Christal Comstock (the girl in the rocking chair) and all of the other children and families who lost their homes in Joplin Missouri. The song is "Barren Field" written and sung by Jan Horvath. The lyrics are based on a poem by Michael Goodreau from the book "Branko's Ride" by Barry Dujlovich. Thanks to all of the photographers from AP, Getty Images, most especially Mario Tama who captured Christal on the rocking chair, Charlie Riedel who found the cross still standing on the church, Jeff Robertson's toy box, and Mike Portsche's sunset. Please send me more credits if you know who took these other amazing photos. I encourage everyone to help the people of Joplin to rebuild. Two great charities that are already helping people to rebuild are http://www.joplinhabitat.org/donate.htm and ConvoyofHope.org but I'm sure there are many more.

  • Oh my goodness! How are you all doing? I've thought about Christal so often and wondered how she was making out...... And I was also curious if she would ever see this. Christal the picture of you was so touching and it inspired me to use your story as the template for this video. I hope it inspired people to send help to your community.

  • Now...I am awed. Your video has made me weak, strong, passionately sad, innocently yet devoutly hopeful, reflective, angry at senseless loss, calm, and dedicated to using every day to tell the people in my life how much I love them before the chance to do so is lost for all eternal time. God bless you and thank you for releasing emotions in me that have been buried under daily trivia for too long.

  • How touching! Tears are streaming down my face! Thank you for this beautiful tribute, Jan, and for touching our hearts, that we may be moved to do what each of us can to help those whose lives have been devastated by these terrible storms and who need to have a place to call home.

  • This must go national. Please send this to everyone in your address book. Jan has at once captured the devastation, compassion, despair, hope, loss, and charity that is the stubborn legacy of the life-changing tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, with unmatched relentless fury. Her beautiful voice and precious, pleading words haunted by the graphic photos, tell the story of the past and the present and promise a future for the people of Joplin. Thank you, Jan.
