Pointless?? Awesome isn't pointless! I'd say 80% of going to the moon was just for the shits and giggles.

Not really, If you are working with a modular synth or something, it would be great to have an oversize oscilloscope projected on the wall.

sad dat is pointless... kewl for a show off

I want one!

hehey, bastante conseguido! llevo tiempo buscando un par de galvos aqui en españa, donde los has pillado tu? cuanto cuestan mas o menos?
saludos!

AWSOME!
on what DAC does this run?

not only is the scanner o-scope badass. but that music is pritty badass as well.

Yet knowing this gives idea for some tests. They would involve a set of frequency sweeps using different waveforms. Not only would this help establish the limits of performance, but there may also expose undesirable resonance and secondary vibrations at some freqs. The only way I could think to improve performance would be to go smaller with the mirrors and solenoids (less mass), but how far that can be pushed while maintaining precision within a small hobby budget is another question.
If you don't mind, look for another vid of a demo called "Youscope" as displayed on an oscilloscope... I suggested a very hackish way of working with it to make a laser show (if headphone speakers as crude mirror solenoids isn't a hack, dunno what is), but you seem to have the materials/knowhow to be far ahead of me. Getting the visuals to work with a soundcard or MP3 player driving the X and Y beam deflection via the L and R channels seems straight-forward enough.

@pauljs75 In fact, youscope was one of the first things I tried on this scanner. It doesn't work well at all, though. The issue is that youscope is meant for a CRT (an oscilloscope), and the CRT beam moves much faster than my laser. You could see the larger shapes but the text wasn't readable and some of the effects just appeared as garbage.

you need to blank on the flyback ;)

Yeah, I rigged this up with an unmodified laser pointer in 5 minutes. I'm waiting on a second laser pointer so I can take the better one and tear it apart. Then I'll add a modulation input and make it run on the PSU instead of batteries :)
