A hypermiler does whatever they can to maximize gas mileage. There are safe ways to do this, and then there are extreme measures that are not worth the danger. We're going to tell you the difference.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Driving skills
Patience
The ability to withstand other drivers' rage
A hybrid car

Warning: Don't even think about tailgating big rigs to catch their drafts or cutting the engine and coasting in neutral. Getting brag-worthy mileage isn't worth risking your life.

Step 1: Slow down

Stay within the speed limit. For every 5 miles per hour you drive above 55, your fuel efficiency is reduced by up to 10 percent.

Step 2: Coast when you can

Coast when you can. It uses no fuel.

Tip: Try to park on hills, where you can get a rolling start.

Step 3: Keep tires inflated

Keep your tires inflated at the maximum. The flatter the tire, the more it drags on the road.

Tip: Don't do what some hypermilers do and over-inflate your tires; it could cause a blowout.

Step 4: Use thin oil

Use the thinnest oil recommended for your car, get regular oil changes, and have the air filter changed when it gets dirty.

Step 5: Avoid traffic

Avoid fuel-wasting stop-and-go driving by taking the road less traveled.

Step 6: Insulate your hood

Install hood insulation to keep the engine warm, when it operates most efficiently.

Step 7: AC off and windows up

Keep the AC off and the windows up when possible.

  • ok...... step1- buy a 4cyl turbodiesel.

Step2- dont buy a american car

Step3-Dont buy a hybrid Becuz yea they may get 5-10 more mpg then your old car but years down the road when the battery needs to be replaced your looken at 4k and labor charges not to mention any engine problems.

step4-your v8 pos SUV is not impressive. :)

  • is it just me or has anyone else been told engines run better when its colder outside, becauase the air is denser

  • @thatciggaweed Denser air is better but a cold engine runs less efficient than an engine that has warmed up. The colder is it the longer the engine takes to warm up.

  • coast only if u have a manual, as when u take your foot off the gas the engine is still turning at 2000-3000 rpm rather than idle speed

  • coasting does use fuel, morons -_-

  • in my jetta vr6 i normally get 8L/100km (29.4mpg) on the highway. when i draft behind a truck i get 5.8L/100 km (40.6 mpg). and tailgating a truck is not that dangerous as long as you pay attention. it takes a truck a lot longer to stop than a car

  • *"step 7 keep AC off and roll up the windows."

    - try doing that in South Texas during the summer in an Isuzu

    hombre lol just saying.

  • No AC if you drive below 55mph (from Mythbusters)

  • The bitch cares soooo much about fuel efficiency yet she's driving a jeep?

  • this makes no sense, in the last howcast vid I watched, it said to use AC, but this tells you to keep it off?? WTF howcast get your facts straight!! -.-

  • @the1bigace thats what i said.the engine itself needs runs most efficiently when its up to operating temperature, but the air going into the engine should be as cold as possible to give a more efficient bang inside the cylinder. i think i may have exhausted this topic with another person. have a look through the other comments.

  • @thatciggaweed yes, a cold INTAKE is great because of oxygen density however WARM ENGINE Combustion temperatures burn the fuel better. Thats what a COLD AIR INTAKE is for, it pulls air from outside the engine compartment and away from the hot engine. NASCAR drivers and Drag Racers idle their engines for as long as possible to keep it warm and in optimal range for the race. And Drag Racers do a burnout before their run to build heat in the engine. so remember COLD intake WARM engine.
