Derelict raf binbrook. The 2nd visit.

Opened in early 1940 as a base to 142 bomber sqn with an extra 12 sqn from Finningley in July of the same year.
Closed again in 1942 to allow construction of concrete runways.
May 1943 saw the reopening and incame 460 sqn which saw more casualties than any other Australian Army, Navy or Air Force.
After the war binbrook hosted the Canberra (RAF's first Jet Bomber). Later transferring to fighter command in 1960 hosting sqn's of English Electric Lightning and Gloucester Javelin.
After Closing in 1988 the film 'Memphis Belle' was filmed at Binbrook. After this it became a relief landing spot for RAF Scampton.

  • Nothing left now but rubble =( All the mess buildings have gone.

  • My last base before I retired. Such a shame it deteriorated into such a mess. I believe it has been knocked over and tidied up as Humberside Airport now. At least it still lives after its resurrection as a 'civvie'.
