This song was first introduced to the American Public in the musical "Leave it to me!" in 1938. Mary Martin was the singer of this very song but had no idea of it's true homosexual innuendo.

All of Cole Porter's song's were literally the life he actually led and this song sums up most of that life.

Cole Porter was great for trying to make the straight, middle class, conservative America secretly crave, the romance, flamboyant, wild party and sexually promiscous life which they all publicly despised.

  • The song has nothing to do with women and daddy's, sugar or otherwise. It was written by a gay man about gay men, daddy being a popular term in gay culture for an older boyfriend

  • @MasterRhettButler That's right, I hear the conservative crowd slightly smiled at themselves when this song came out, knowing what he was up to but just ignoring the flavour of his lyrics. haha

  • They mention this song in Bitches, Bimbos, and Ballbreakers: the Guerilla Girl's Guide to Female Stereotypes. The question is, does she refer to her actual father or a lover? And if it is a lover, why does she call him daddy? Would you sing this song to your father? Why does society think it is ok to call men daddy or women mommy? Are the Electra and Oedipus complexes real then?

  • the girl in this song is basically a sugar daddy. marilyn loved the song as she felt more comfortable in having lovers that were much older men, especially with glasses :)

  • "Daddy" was slang from around this period for a woman's older male lover who'd provide financial support. She'd call him daddy because, like a father, he was older and a provider. This is not about an Electra complex or anything incestual.

  • ""i'm not supposed to play...

    With Boys <3

    Moi ? ahah

    Mon ♥ est à papa"

    I love it <3

  • I wish she was in porn for once.

  • like if your watching this in 2012!!

  • I didn't know about the original meaning of the song, I find it a very beautiful whatever meaning you give to it.

  • @vickeeheart you don't want that. don't tell people that. you shouldn't even be dating. if you want to know what this song is about read Lolita when you're a little older.....

  • @vickeeheart appearantly you have a sugar daddy and there's nothing sweet about it

  • Actually sad that her real dad never confessed hisself to his daughter.

  • @bjbutler420 Hmmm.... this makes sense... but now I'm wondering - Why do some guys sometimes refer to their girlfriends as their "old ladies"..?

  • That little old man he just treat it so Goooood !

    I love it.

  • I like her very much as a singer, in other songs too. She didn't have the powerful voice of a belter so appreciated by the US public but she had an excellent sense of rhythm and clear enunciation.
