Railfanning San Diego back in December of 1996. This is Part 1 of 2. This video features the early morning rail-commute, California cars on the surfline, Coaster trains, and Amtrak F40's in action. Here is the train info:

Train #1...The first San Diegan of the day crosses Noell St with a rather large set of California & Superliner Cars. F40PH's at both ends. #233 leads with #237 trailing.

Train #2...F40PH #2103 leads a Coaster set towards Oceanside.

Train #3...Amtrak F40PH #293 leads a short train North towards LA. One of the shortest Amtrak sets I have seen on the surfline.

Train #4...Southbound Coaster passes Noell St.

Train #5...Another Southbound Coaster passes Noell St. Nice K5LA on the cabcar!

Train #6...Amtrak San Diegan slowly cruises through Noell St with an F59phi leading a set of Amfleet cars.

Train #7...Minutes later, the first southbound Amtrak San Diegan of the day passes by. Cabcar #9635 leads the train with F40PH #231 powering the set.

Thanks for watching!!

  • I didn't know that Amtrak used the superliner cars on the san diegans. I thought they just used the amfleets.

  • @penguingeneral2 They used Amfleets on all their sets except for one or two. They had Superliners and California cars

  • Sweet video! Loved the sky and the catches were awesome. :D

  • @TheADude213 Thanks man!

  • Great video Chris. Love those shots of the Coaster and San Diegans, especially the San Diegans with the California cars. I can't wait for the old videos you're gonna upload soon.

  • Say, will you eventually put up any footage you have from 1999-2002?

  • Great Catches!

  • @AmtrakCal462 No, I didn't get a video camera until 2001 or so.
