Following the events of Sonic 2, Sonic and Tails travel to a mysterious floating island in order to investigate the crashed Death Egg, and to see if Robotnik is still alive.

However, upon reaching their destination, Sonic is attacked by the island's guardian, an echidna named "Knuckles".

He steals the Chaos Emeralds and disappears, leaving Sonic and Tails to traverse the island's many zones unprotected. Undeterred, Sonic races on through the jungle, eager to reclaim the Chaos Emeralds and catch up with Knuckles for some well deserved payback

And thus, the events of Sonic 3 and Knuckles begin...

Anyone else notice how the paintings in Hidden Palace Zone during the fight with Knuckles basically shows you the final battle with Robotnik at the end of Sonic 3 & Knuckles

i think i get why the fire sheild hant appared mush since this game, when it comes to lava stages its almost like havign super sonic but without paying for it

Even to this day, the scene where Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles work together for the first time in Hidden Palace/Sky Sanctuary is still one of my favorite moments.
