  • ummm, yah i read the book, but idk what theme the commerital was about

  • How the society of 1984 was as the book described and Big Brother was overseeing everything. The whole world is mundane and everyone just follow the party line. It is the release of the Macintosh computer that revolutionized the society and released the people from Big Brother's grip. At the time the "Big Brother" was IBM.

  • So...whats with all the hype? It wasnt that good.

  • You have to read the book "1984". The ad is playing on the theme and concept from the book's prediction of what 1984 would be like.

  • This was the begining of the mega commercial designed for debut during the super bowl/

  • rip steve jobs

  • Gay.

  • Oh! Okay thanks. Yeah I've heard of that book. I'm gunna watch the movie tonight but I know it wont equal the book, movies never do haha

  • When the Macintosh came out it was to a monopoly of IBM computers. Sure, Apple had products, but IBM had the biggest shares.

What made Macintosh so "revolutionary" was the GUI. There was now a computer where users could see what they were doing, and no longer were computers limited to experts, now everyone could learn to use and master a computer.

That's what the advert was going on about; if everyone could use a computer, then there wouldn't really be a Big Brother who was master of computers

  • it's anya major

  • Directed by Ridley Scott which you can sort of tell in the cinematography.

  • That might have had more impact if people had understood the whole idea of the commercial. 1984 was not exactly the hippest book to be reading.

  • Thanks for posting the video. Even though I heard a lot about this commercial, I had not seen it until now.

Does anybody know the name of this Olympic runner?

  • Sure, for one. Does it have to be "Big Sibling" for the analogy to be plausible? See vinko's comment above. The idea Apple wants to convey is that Mac was revolutionary, a challenge to the mundane and stifling world order dominated by IBM. The fact that computers are portals in people's homes DOES make the "Big Brother" analogy relevant. I personally thought it was creative.
