It's one of my favorites sites, not only that but I think most of us cakers worry that one of our cakes will end up there ;D
Ah, Spring, that time of year when cake decorators everywhere start wondering why their buttercream has suddenly stopped working right! That was only part of the problem with this cake, it was very warm and humid in my kitchen but the problem began with the mixing. I was trying to make my pb fluff buttercream but I accidentally added the fluff and the peanutbutter at the same time. I added a little powdered sugar once that was blended but it just didn't look right. From there I just kept adding a little bit of this, a little bit of that, blend it some more, add some more, back and forth until it somewhat resembled frosting. I frosted the cake and waited to decorate it, I thought things might look a little better if the cake rested for awhile in a room where the AC was running.
Two hours later I couldn't take it anymore, the frosting was literally sliding off the cake!! I scraped off the sides, added some chocolate buttercream to it, some more of this, a little more of that, and tried again. It did taste really good but the consistency was more like soft taffy than frosting. That bubble formed pretty quickly and I've had a few of them lately, I think I have to cut down on the corn syrup in my frosting and just use cream when the weather is so humid. You can see in the video how the frosting gradually looks more and more saggy, by the next morning the larger bulge was really bad. Fortunately this was just for a friend's cookout and they don't really care how the cake looks, which is good, by the time we got there the bulge was about to break.
Moral of the story? Never give up, never surrender. Some of my cakes have names, usually the most memorable ones, this one is called 'Humble Cake' :D
The flowers that I used are from a book by Roland Winbeckler:

@SaraCVT lol-that's why it's a cake wreck-it's awful even with the frosting :D

Why, oh why, are you putting the finishing decorations on before the base coat of frosting or fondant--OF COURSE it looks strange! I don't think I've ever seen that before. Just put on a base coat of frosting, and no-one would ever see the oddities of the crust that I assume happened when it came out of the pan. THEN put the floral details on, which by the way, turned out very nicely,

@SaraCVT Hmmm. Well, that IS frosting that I'm putting decorations on.

@SaraCVT Did you NOT read the description box? It's called peanut butter frosting and the last time I checked, peanut butter is brown. She just scraped off some frosting on the top or it was a different colored frosting. By the way, SeriousCakes, your cake didn't look bad at all, it just looked yummy. I also loved how you improvised with the fire station at the end. :)
