On Saturday, June 12 we headed south to Carson City,NV to ride the V&T RR and had a blast. The 45 minute ride takes you to Virginia City where you have about 3 hours to stroll thru that old west mining town. Half way there, they stop and let ya detrain for a photo run-by. So here is #29, a Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation pulling her ex-LIRR day coaches. We even got to hear #29 spin her drivers because half way up the mountain the grade is 4%, and boy did she ever sound good! If you're ever in this area, this RR is a must do by all means!

  • New whistle??

  • @Miserlou57 I have no idea. This was the first time I was ever there.

  • @pahogger No new whistle, occasionally they will use a guest whistle, but it sounded to me like they might have been low on pressure. Did they sit for a while and water up / build up the fire? When I just rode, they had an injector problem and they had to stop twice to get water from the tender.

  • @virginiatruckee They stopped to check that the wheels weren't over heating, but other than that they didn't stop, except for the run-by.

  • Great video Kenny! Im glad you had a great time out there!

  • @NS6677 I'd go again anytime. But next time I'm heading farther west to explore the line in the mountains.

  • @virginiatruckee that whistle is now on the 18. It's no where near as beautiful as Old 29's current 5-chime or her old 6-chime.

  • I think you got pretty lucky with the photo runby, they were doing that, but I just rode on July 4, 2010, and there was no runby. Also, they had so much trouble with people standing in the way that they don't do the full speed runbys any more.

  • @ConrailSD70MAC Yes, it's named for Robert C.Gray. He bought it back in 1977 and rebuilt this line. The locomotive was originally built in 1916 for the Longview, Portland & Northern Railway as #680. It was in such good shape, that very little had to be done to it to get her running again.

  • The name on the locomotive, is it for the present owner of the present V&T or a past owner?
