If the big companies dont do it then the governments should foot the bill. We have all known for a long time that the greedy pharmacutical companies can cure but it is better business to give someone a pill 3 times a day for the rest of their life than one that will cure. The people involved in this are either dead or have been payed off. There is too much money involved in the pharmaceutical companies. For instance take for instance the ADA, there was a man I believe it was Colgate who developed a type of toothpaste or what have you that could actively fight off enamel damage, gingivitis, cavities for years with just one application. The ADA had the formula and research destroyed. There is just too much money involved in such things and they don't like to lose.

What happens to all that money you and I have given to cancer research going? For instance every retail store I patronized during breast cancer awarness month was accepting donations for a race for the cure. Can all this money be tapped to aid research? Answer is hell no.
