I agree with the others. crying is a perfectly natural thing to do. It's our body's response to extreme emotion, whether it be happiness, sadness, or even anger. It also shows how secure you feel about yourself. So the person that told you that is probably very insecure. Some people don't feel the need to cry, but it's all in the personality. My point being: it's not selfish.

life's rough enough without getting a chance to let your feelings out. You can also cry for others, so I don't think it's selfish at all.
