No matter what your thoughts on President Nixon was. Him going to China was his biggest successes. Any president would like to have something like this on their record.

But even that's not a good comparison. (Obama in N. Korea) There is really no comparison today, because the cold war is dead & there aren't any proxy wars. Also, China's involvement in Vietnam lessened after Sino-Soviet split in 1968.

The U.S. and China had just finished fighting what was essentially a proxy war in Vietnam. The only comparable thing today would be if Obama went to North Korea.

I remember this like it was yesterday. It's easy to forget that before this, China was completely inaccessible to the West. It was as big a deal as if Nixon had personally gone to the Moon.
