Students, faculty, parents and community members involved with John Dewey High School are holding demonstrations every Friday morning at 7:15AM outside the school campus at 50 Avenue X, Brooklyn.

The group is protesting possible plans by the Department of Education to close the high school, once a beacon in the New York City public school system. They are asking the DOE be collaborators in bringing positive change to the school. John Dewey is among the 47 on the DOE's PLA list. Dewey's fate has yet to be announced and its supporters are hoping the DOE will hear their plea.

JDHS has faced tremendous challenges over the past several years. Amongst them: several budget cuts, slashing of major programs like music, dance, theater and publications and taking in hundreds of new students following the closure of Lafayette High School, many of whom did not adapt well to Dewey's non-traditional model. The school has also been assigned many at-risk students without receiving the necessary training or support to ensure that these students are successful.

The Dewey supporters held the first Fight Back Friday demonstration on November 5th. There was a great turnout despite the cold early morning drizzle. They marched in front of a hand-painted banner that read "John Dewey High School Is Not For Sale!" while chanting "Energize don't privatize". Individual handwritten signs read: "Students Before Profits" and "Public Education is a right".

The group plans to demonstrate every Friday at 7:15 A.M. for the foreseeable future. The only exceptions will be days that the school is closed. They welcome anyone who wishes to join them in support.

  • wow ... i saw myself

  • Overall, I will say, this school is not bad at all. In fact... it is AMAZING. If you're an 8th grader into the arts, film, technology, health professions, or even culinary THIS is the school for you! Dewey offers so much in it's unique style along with the exclusive Dewey tutoring centers called RC's, and our huge campus with awesome annual events and so much more. Seriously the NYCDOE at the time lost their mind, shame on them. John Dewey High School differs from the average NYC high school.
