Joan Sutherland - O nube che lieve / Nella Pace (Maria Stuarda, Studio recording)

Wonderful performance by Joan Sutherland from Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda". In this recording she sings the Malibran version which is far more florid overall.

About the performance itself; the cavatina is in the Giuseppina Ronzi de Begnis key and Joan dodges the lowest note in the cadenza (a low Ab). And the cabaletta is the Malibran's version in Malibran's key. A sort of mixing of versions which Richard usually did, as in their "I Puritani", recording the whole Grisi version plus an aria written for Malibran at the end.

This is true class 1A artistry. No other female singer can touch her. The technique is astonishing and there's always more and more. The voice is a diamond cutting and sparkling in the setting of its orchestra and chorus.

Imagine if two thousand years from now the artefacts of our era are still available. Won't this period we are living in now be known as the Sutherland era?

I think this interpolated modulation is in bad taste, ive never heard anyone sing two halves of a cabaletta in different keys
