I don't know why Percy backed up. He only went a little way back and then went on to the turntable as normal. At that point he would have been uncoupling from the carriages rather than coupling too them.
Although tank engines do not actually need a turntable, there is one at each station to ensure that the train is always pulled along with the engine's face visible.
