Band camp was in the mornings, to learn the drill and practice the show, then football in the afternoons while the band worked on music and stands' tunes for pep band. And after football, I showered in a spare shower hidden away in the back of the field house, and I would get dressed there. Outside I'd just mess around with some of my band friends that would stick around to watch me in practice while I waited for Gage to come out so we could go home.

School had approached, fast and furiously ending summer break. The first day of school, I woke up grudgingly and showered. I looked at myself in the mirror, thinking, before I conceded. If I wanted to change my dating status I was going to have to start dressing like a girl. In the past I always wore jeans and hoodies or t-shirts. I have plenty of nice clothes though, because my mom always wanted me to actually dress like my gender. It never worked though, until now.

I pulled my makeup bag towards me, full of new stuff that I'd gotten from family over the summer but never actually used. I squeezed some of the liquid foundation onto my hand and rubbed it evenly in all over my face. Next was the powder, and I was surprised at how smooth it made my skin look. I hadn't put much on at all, unlike some of the other girls in my school. I leaned forward to put on some blue eye shadow. I didn't wear eye liner, mainly because I wasn't in the mood to poke myself in the eye with a pencil. I put my mascara on last, and when I studied myself in the mirror I looked like a completely different person, to myself at least. In truth, it hadn't made that much difference. Just brought out my eyes more, the chocolate brown with specks of honey dew.

What to wear? I wanted jeans, because I liked how they made my long legs and butt look. I pulled on my bra, panties, and navy blue camisole. It took some digging, but I finally found a nice green American Eagle t-shirt. It was skin tight, with a dipping neckline to show my camisole covered cleavage. And once I had my jeans on, I slipped into a pair of flip flops.

"What the hell," Gage said, dropping his fork.

I rolled my eyes. "Don't look so shocked."

"You're wearing makeup and flip flops!" Gage stood and crossed the kitchen as I poured myself a glass of apple juice at the counter. He poked my cheek, and I slapped his hand away. "Are you my sister? I'm not sure you are. Samantha Travis would never wear makeup, or skin tight clothes, or flip flops. And she never has her boobs hanging out of her shirt either."

"Oh shut up," I snapped, turning to glare at him. "Dad talked to Coach about us not being at practice tomorrow through the rest of the week."

"He told me. Coach isn't too happy that you won't be there to run through the game plan for next week's showdown with Tech," Gage said, returning to his eggs. Mom must have made them before she left for work. I sat down at the plate for me and started eating. We didn't have much time until we had to be at school. "I love how he cares about you more than me. I'm the star of the defense, after all."

"Conceited much?" He laughed.

"You know I'm joking," Gage said, taking his plate to the kitchen sink. If Mom came home that night and saw his or my plate on the table, we'd be in trouble. We've been raised to clean up after ourselves and keep our rooms clean. "Are you ready for Grand?"

"Are you kidding me? Of course I'm ready." I put my plate and glass in the sink too.

Grand was the national level of competition for competitive shooting. My brothers and I have all been a part of the Hayman County team since we were old enough. This was Gage's last year, and it was our best chance to win it all. Last year we'd come the closest any Hayman team had in the past. We'd got second overall, and Gage was the top shooter in the nation from any level.

"You think we can win it?" Gage grabbed his backpack from the bar and swung it onto his shoulder. "I mean, we've got everyone back from last year but that California team only lost one person."

"We can win it," I assured him. "But let's worry about sporting clays and skeet first, before trap."

"It's not easy not to worry," Gage grumbled.

"You used two negatives," I teased as I climbed up into the passenger side of his truck. "That's a no-no."

"I didn't use a double negative Ms. No-No. So leave me alone," Gage said, but he smiled at me.

"I can't leave you alone. I have to be the annoying little sister," I told him.

"And I'm going to be the annoying, over bearing older brother who spanks your butt," Gage responded.

"You wouldn't dare."

"Try me."

I love the relationship between Samantha and her brothers. Antagonistic and up front about everything.
