duran was well past it against hagler ,he was a blown up lightweight and after 12 rounds was beating hagler, but it went to 14,leonard came out of retirement after years and beat him albeit controversially,i think monzon would have taken both of them apart at that weight and at that time, dont forget 15 rounds is 9 minutes longer than the 12 hopkins ever went to ,many of the old fights were decided in those late rounds, like the hagler duran one for instance

Howard is usually quite well informed by his staff, but he sure missed the boat in claiming Carlos was a "clean living" athlete. The great Middleweight king was a nicotine addict, and was reputed to have smoked a great many packs of cigs a day. Appears to have had no ill effect on his incredible stamina, however. Benvenuti was a shot fighter at this point, but he had some great wins in his career and is generally underrated. Great character, too, stood by his friend Carlos in he was in prison.

the only person that thinks cosell knows anything about boxing is....
wait for it....
howard fucking cosell!

Howard Cossell was a complete tool in this match. He must have been receiving some kind of "benefit" to pump up Benvenuti this much.

Grande Monzon!
un orgullo el tener un boxeador como vos
Que en paz descanses, por siempre en nuestros corazones!

Monzon was better then Hagler no question about it. But both guys get there ass beat by Roy Jones in his prime.
Hagler could walk through hearns jadbs and straightbombs to get to his man..leonard beat him due to a 21 foot ring and FOOTWORK to stay away...tall fighters would not be able to keep hagler away for ever....ALI type fighters with FOOTWORK could just keep him away Monzon was great (just under jones jr) but he is no ALI or Leonard in terms of FOOTWORK as you can see my the slow pace of the fight...Even the Hearns from Hagler fight had more power and SPEED alone than this fight

Sure, Monzon wasn't a fast, fleet-footed boxer but he contolled the distance like few others. And if an opponent managed to close the distance, he just tied him up in a clinch. It was simple as that: notice that in his filmed fights he never let anyone working inside more than a couple of seconds in a row. It's true Hearns' height and reach didn't help him against Hagler, but it's not like he was trying to use them to keep Marv away: he was happy to brawl with him.

Let's not forget Hearns wasn't exactly the most durable guy at 160, while Monzon was made of iron. He was also a smarter ring general and wouldn't have let Hagler lure him in a slugfest. Marvin was no fool himself and knew he couldn't KO him in 3 Rounds. In fact, there's little to none chance of a stoppage in a Monzon-Hagler fight: both too tough, too good technically and they didn't have that kind of sick power. I see a close, tactical battle

@judaschongo Monzon's quality of opponents was lesser than Hagler's. Most people recognize he got hosed against Leonard or else he would've gone out the same way and against better competition. The division record is immaterial. If the klitschko break joe louis' record, does that make them better fighters? not likely. Monzon didn't beat greats like Duran or Hearns. He's above Hopkins, but below Hagler

Monzon beat Emile Griffith, who is an all time great and was a better middleweight than Duran and Hearns. Check their record
José Napoles was in Leonard's class as a welterweight, easily top 5 of all time, and got destroyed by Monzon. Like it or not, Hagler had a dead close fight with Sugar Ray and lost the title

Monzon would have still won the fight, but it's obvious the trainer bet against his own fighter.

Naaaa, they knew Nino was done BEFORE the fight; months before he had been KO in a tune up match. It was just the last payday for Benvenuti and his trainer spared him a pointless beating
