It just came on recently about 2-3 weeks ago during those weeks i didn't really take the car out. Maybe 3-4 times and for those times it's gotten louder and this is the loudest it's been. So after researching about it here on youtube they say it might be the fan belt but i tightened it up and it only reduced the noise a little. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine where the fan is.

  • Sounds like the valves may need to be adjusted...My 61 does that too when it sits for a while but after it warms up it stops.

  • @wildcorvair yeah, i just realized that i had it sitting for weeks and this came up! so i guess i just have to warm it up a little. But is it safe to drive it like this? Does it do any harm to the engine or the car? Btw, what kind of oil do you put in your car? i just put 20w50 and it feels like i'm towing another car. It feels like it's slowing down my car. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

  • Sounds to me like a sticking valve, rocker arm or lifter, or a rocker arm that is out of adjustment.

  • @jayflyer54 Hi. Thanx for leaving a comment. Could you please help with some other questions that i have if you have time. How bad is it to keep on driving it like this way? How harmful is it? And would it make the engine go worse?

  • @temka892004 If it were me I wouldn't drive it too long this way. Like wildcorvair says, sometimes it goes away after a few minutes which means the lifters are a little clogged but the oil still moves through them. If the noise doesn't go away you should correct the problem as soon as possible. Depending on what is causing the problem you could bend a lifter, screw up the rocker arm or worse crack a valve. As far as the oil you use, I'd stick with 10W30, the 20W50 may be too thick.
