If u want to use surgical blades with guards without destroying them u must adjust to 0000 n sted of 00000. Without th guards u don't get the full use of the clipper. U sacrifice baldness (00000) for the use of a guard which gives more range of use. U still have the luxury of a a smoother cut because of the added teeth compared to the imporved master. B careful and use oil often.The surgicals are very rigid because of the added teeth. jonq95@yahoo.com for pics of surg with guard fades!

Ok alot of nfo on this post is wrong. U can use surgical blades with speed o combes. Just adjust to 0000 and use ur trimmers fot the 00000. The main dif in the surgicals r 28 teeth vs. 23 (smoother). Also surgicals open to 000 not 0. This is good bcause when adjusted to 0000 closed with 0 speed o comb gives a 00. 0000 minus 0 les 1 for for the flatness n the surg equals 00. This config is what u need to use the guard with surgicals.

@trowe1986 its almost always against the grain when taking the hair down.... I never really worked with african american hair (im latino).. but im pretty sure he cut his hair with the grain because he had waves.... hope this helped

i'm confuse now because i see alot of barber cut with the grain or against the grain and they all do the same hair cuts. same with tapers some start with open to began and some start with close.

I was also wondering about the cut range in mm because different companies use different scales. I had been using an oster 76 with a #2 for my dark caesar w/ 360 waves and the "#2" on the phat master cuts a lot closer than the #2 (6.3mm) blades on a oster 76. I'm not complaining b/c I think the Masters did a better job... Honestly the only reason I bought the 76 1st was b/c I caught a deal and got them with every blade oster makes for $250

I forgot I posted this...lol! But found the answer, fade masters CAN be used with guide combs, Andis make a set specifically for the Fade & Improved's and I know from trying that the fades will destroy universal Speed-O type Guides. A Co. called Yanaki makes full metal guides specifically for them. Phats are a no comb situation... I got the fades last week but since it needs special combs I just traded for the Phat b/c I don't do much bald fading rt now. Im gonna get the fades again.
