Prison Riot: Smashed windows, burnt buildings as inmates rampage in UK

Rioting inmates caused heavy damage to a low-security prison on Saturday, smashing windows and setting fires that engulfed buildings and spewed clouds of black smoke. Mark Freeman, deputy general secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said the riot started after some prisoners refused to take breath tests. At the time, only two prison officers and four support staff were on duty, he said. Freeman said a large amount of alcohol had been found at the prison and spoke of "how dangerous even open condition prisoners can be." "My understanding is that staff on the night suspected that some of the prisoners had been drinking alcohol and wished to, according to the policy here, to breathalise them. The prisoners refused and the other prisoners joined in that act of indiscipline and prison officers were then threatened and they had to remove themselves to a place of safety," he said. Officials said about 40 inmates at Ford Open Prison near Arundel, 60 miles (95 kilometres) south of London, began the disturbance at around midnight New Year's Eve. By midday, two buildings were still ablaze, though fires had been extinguished at several other buildings, which were heavily damaged. The prison's staff retreated and specialist officers were called in to handle the riot, the Ministry of Justice said. There were no immediate reports of injuries to staff or inmates. The prison houses up to 500 offenders with less than two years remaining on their sentences to prepare them for release.

@MEpianist I wasn't talking about weed in specific, and I don't really care if people smoke it or not. What is was referring to was that instead of via democracy getting rid of the law prohibiting weed, you seemed to advocate a violent revolution (as the rioters in London like to think it as.) Violence isn't the answer, unless there is no democratic way to get a change.

Also, do you really think cops don't smoke? They want it legalized as well, but it's not up to them to decide, but the people.

It's not the case hardly ever, although in some cases that's probably a good thing. 2. Don't give me that shit about Central Africa, examples abound in Europe where governments have adopted an enlightened drug policy and the police are actually respected by the populace.

@MEpianist If your "sons" get put in prison because they smoke weed then it's up to YOU to get a democratic change on that. Apparently, since there is a law against it, more than 50% of the British population wants them behind bars. That's how democracy works, the majority makes the rules.

If smoking weed is more important than democracy then you are free to move to central africa. You don't like the violence there? Sorry, you can't keep the cake and eat it at the same time.

@madichelp0 Cops don't "pay tax" either if that's your fucking stupid line of nonsense. We pay them to arrest (>50%) marijuana users, i.e. our sons and daughters and nephews and nieces. We pay them to use fancy toys to arrest these non-violent offenders and it's about time that we just put them all on a barge, let it on fire, and burned them all up over the Atlantic.
