Excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Sleeping Beauty is one of Tchaikovskys most successful and enduring works. Based on a fairy tale written in 1697 by Charles Perrault, this ballet has played a prominent role in the history of many individuals and institutions: American Ballet greats such as Lucia Chase (founder of the American Ballet Theatre), George Balanchine, Rudolf Nureyev, all made their debuts with Sleeping Beauty. This ballet re-opened the Royal Opera House after World War two and was the first program for the premier of the Royal Ballet in the United States. Tchaikovsky is one of the worlds most popular composers, best known for his tunes and brilliant orchestrations. To the world of classical ballet, however, he is a hero, having elevated dance to a respectable art form. His three ballets remain the most frequently performed dance scores in the world.
