Em OLoughlin and Wendy Littles The Middle Ages is a fantasy comedy about getting old and living with it, despite what century youre living in.
Hosted at Arthurs Bar at Rosati during the (2009) Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The Middle Ages charts the adventure of two women who use a time (or bargain) machine to lose 20 years off their body clocks. Unfortunately the date on the machine is set wrong, sending them back to the Middle Ages, still middle-aged.
Here they must contend with their Kath-and-Kim voiced vessel who demands they return with certain feudal artifacts, avoid a snobby, rather feminine castle guard, perform as minstrels for the village locals, and search for the fountain of (sorry, bucket) of youth.
There is a great sense of parody in the way the women refer to their aging dilemmas, as though it is a celebration as much as a curse. The most effective sections are when the women have their chance to do individual stand-up bits. They complain about their positions in life with tongues in cheeks, the most intriguing slice being Ems account of her first ever first date at 40 years of age.
For those up for some light self-therapy about their own worry lines, crows feet, growing humps and sagging lumps, The Middle Ages might be just the ticket.
