Feeling Safe, Being Safe, a close captioned DVD, illustrates the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency and how anyone can create a personalized plan in their own home to feel safe and be safe. Emergencies and disasters happen every day and many people are not ready to respond. Feeling Safe, Being Safe tools show how to make your plan, connect with your community members and create a home emergency kit.
Members of the Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) for Californias Department of Developmental Services, in partnership with the Board Resource Center (BRC), implemented a three year project called Leadership Through Personal Change to assist Californians with developmental disabilities to live by the motto: My Life, My Way! In the course of their work, they established and practiced a straightforward decision-making process called Think-Plan-Do to demonstrate how to create a goal, make plans, and take action to succeed.

In the aftermath of natural disasters in the United States and around the world and the serious consequences felt by many, the CAC turned attention to creating ways to help all people be confident in their ability to carry out individualized plans to be better prepared. Using the Think-Plan-Do methodology, the CAC insisted emergency preparedness instructions and tools be user friendly, if they are to be effective. With CAC guidance, BRC developed and field-tested a DVD (close-captioned), Worksheet, Magnet and teaching curriculum - the package of Feeling Safe, Being Safe instructional materials. Since its launch by the CAC, Feeling Safe, Being Safe has been presented at national and international conferences and is currently being adopted or adapted for use in other states.

The CAC has sponsored and co-produced additional leadership videos viewable on YouTube found by using search word: cac leadership or boardresourcecente. Additional advocacy publications that provide insight on legal rights and strategies are available on the California Department of Developmental Services - Consumer Corner website: www.dds.ca.gov/consumercorner/publicatio ns.cfm

The Board Resource Center is about Making Complex Ideas Simple. It adapts complicated written materials and/or difficult-to-understand ideas to develop meaningful tools and trainings that can benefit a range of participants. It assists organizations to recognize that people with diverse abilities enrich decision making and help build effective governance and connections to local communities.
