Historical Background

Written by sisters Ann (1782 -- 1866) and Jane (1783 -- 1824) Taylor, "Twinkle, Twinkle" was first published in "Rhymes for the Nursery" in 1806, originally titled "The Star." The original version contains five stanzas, the first being most familiar. The rhyme paints a picture of stars in the sky using fun and easy-to-grasp similes. This teaches children the basic use of comparisons and figures of speech cementing a foundation for early literacy, and developing the imagination's visual vocabulary. Due to its popularity, "The Star" has been frequently parodied, for example by the Mad Hatter in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland":

Twinkle, twinkle, little bat!
How I wonder what you're at!
Up above the world you fly,
Like a tea-tray in the sky.

"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is sung in the tune of "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman," a French melody on which Mozart composed twelve variations.
