A thoughtful piece as always from Stephen Fry, sharing his experiences of depression. This clip is edited from a longer film by The Open University. The original version can be found here: http://youtu.be/lUh76xjQPjQ

  • @dudesonman4200 What if it interferes with another person's happiness?

  • @selty ".......still find hope and relieft in it?" Is "it" religion? If so, this is because it is a self-deception. Religion is method of lying to yourself. I know you don't like the word "lie." It is a bit too harsh for you. However, the lie is the truth. (lol The Lie is the Truth.) Being engulfed in religion is sort of like being a boy or a girl. You are not in reality. You are not mature yet.

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus Then why do so many people still find hope and relief in it? It is what works for you, as the saying goes. I completely agree with you about, "the lie" but I wouldn't word it in such a negative way. That doesn't help the situation you are in.

  • I feel so much better knowing that Britain's gem, Stephen Fry, goes through the exact same thing as me... He's beautiful.

  • Mycroft! XD

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus Or we don't need to lie to ourselves. I feel love and I have the emotion of love inside of me. That is enough to convince me to keep living and to be happy. That's the powerfulness of it and no lies need to be done as it's not a "Logical" argument.

It's a feeling and a reason for being more powerful than any words themselves could convey.

We could debate this forever. My personal feeling, (and by the way, I have manic depression) is that I am insulted by the idea that I need some kind of fucking reward after life in order to enjoy life. Life is the reward. Live it while you can. "If there is no god, everything is permitted." Good. I like it when everything is permitted. I am human being, and I like to drink, fuck, and do whatever I want, and as long as it doesnt interfere with anyone elses safety, I will.

  • @dudesonman4200 Not if you are a true existentialist. When realizes there is no god, then one also realizes that one's behavior has no ultimate meaning. As Dostoevsky wrote, "If there is no god, everything is permitted." In other words, Mother Teresa is not in heaven and Hitler is not in hell. The is The Absurd that Camus wrote about. This brings Despair and invites suicide. Camus wrote that once a man understands The Absurd, the remaining philosophical question is suicide.
