http://www.ProfitableHospitality.com See how Australia's weekend and public holiday penalty wage rates impact on costs and bottom-line profit. This example covers Monday-Friday (no penalty), Saturday (25% penalty), Sunday (50% penalty) and public holidays (150% penalty).

For many owners, the very high cost of wages on Sundays and Public Holidays mean they will stay closed.

  • But are they all paying full penalty rates? That's the question - many feel they can't, and take the risk by not doing it. Nothing magic about the numbers above.

  • Hey this is why no cafes are open on weekends and public holidays! Oh wait, no, heaps of them are. It must be because the operators are running a charity? I think not.
