Live video footage from Oingo Boingo's 1983 concert at the US Festival. One of my favorites from this concert. Here I thought Danny would be unable to dance around since he had to stay still to play the rumba-phone, but boy was I wrong. He has made moving around as much as possible while standing in just one location into an art form. For those who want to watch the concert in order...
Setlist:
1. Cry Of The Vatos
2. Dead Or Alive
3. Ain't This The Life
4. Who Do You Want To Be
5. No Spill Blood
6. Private Life
7. Grey Matter
8. Insects
9. Wild Sex
10. Nothing To Fear
11. Violent Love
12. Sweat
13. Capitalism
14. On The Outside
15. Goodbye Goodbye

  • excellent performance and video quality as always!

By the way, I don't think that the instrument Danny is playing is called a 'rumba-phone'. I met Steve Bartek in London last november and he told me that Danny used a Balophone that Danny made himself! I don't know if that is definitely the one he is playing in this video but I'd imagine that it was

  • Leon created the "rumba-phones" that are found only in Boingo. He said he took balafons and westernized them to be played with our western instruments and that is what the Danny and Hatch/Avila use for these songs. If your interested, I could try finding the link where Leon posted pictures and descriptions of all the instruments he created, including these rumba-phones, which are listed as such in their albums. Although it's possible Danny learned from Leon how to make them as well...

  • Why do I smile like a retard everytime I see Danny Elfman?

  • This was one badass concert. Danny Elfman and those devilish eyes. AWESOME!

  • This was my 1st concert. I saw Boingo 4 more times, and they became my favorite band. Boingo was also my last concert, around 1996 at Universal City CA. I'm now introducing them to my 7 & 9 y/o boys.

  • Or maybe not this is year after.

  • I was there on that hot day in the dust. But it was worth it, with Oingo, B-52s Talking Heads and The Police closing...AWESOME

  • I am very proud of my little brother for listening to great music. He comes home form school one day and says all the kids at his school listen to are pop and rap crap music. So, he tries to shows them some Oingo Boingo music. They didn't even let him finish one song. They instantlly called it crap and ignored him.

I feel bad for kids these days.

  • Went to this show... Was 15

  • @witherwing I'm jealous. I was 15 too, it would've been my first Boingo concert but my mommy wouldn't let me go!! In spite I saw them live 12 times before their farewell concert.

  • good hot roasting spirit

  • @witherwing i'm a huge fan and i'm 14, high five! XD
