I remember an infestation of GM's in Worcester MA. when I was a kid. It was the late 70's. They were everywhere. Millions upon millions. We couldn't ride our bikes because the streets were literally crawling with them, not to mention slippery and slimy due to the cars running them over by the thousands. Every tree had baby GM's hanging by a silk. We couldn't hang our clothes out because they would get covered. It was the most disgusting summer I ever had..but the crows had a feast..ewwww...lol

You are trying to suppress GM, ie reducing their number to prevent defoliation, not eradicate them. Your method will also keep the caterpillars in the tree, since they can't move to the ground litter to hide during the day. Not sure how effective this would be.
