Clicker training the dog to heel beside you takes little time and works at least as well. A friend of mine used a halti or something similar, and the dog fought putting the halter on. I showed the dog clicker training, and then showed them how to get the dog to follow them using clicker and reinforcement, then increasing the distractions, and they can now walk the dog in a park and he doesn't bark after the other dogs, gives only a yip when someone comes to the door.
