I found a praying mantis in my back yard and started filming it. By luck, I got some footage of it catching, struggling with, and eating prey.

  • can prople hold them or will they attack???

    where can i find one???

  • I don't know where you can find them; they have always just shown up in my yard. (In Pennsylvania.) I've had them sit on my hand. They don't sting or bite, as far as I know. They are a protected species; illegal to harm them, I believe.

  • 0:23 Let go of my antanae!!

  • you no whats cool about these bugs they wont let go of their pray i have one and it will not let go for nothing

  • if they grab your finger with their forearms it hurts a bit, but doesn't draw blood. Just a little sting since they have spikes on them...

  • 'Nomnomnom.' I seriously got that impression with the... beetle?

    Regardless. She's so prettyy...

  • ..and no, they usually will not hurt humans, because they realize our size. If they're hungry though and you offer it to them, they will nibble your finger and a large mantis can actually break the skin.

  • They're hard to find as adults and I know of nobody that ships them as such. If you're adventurous, however, you can order egg cases in spring from a number of natural pesticides places or even from eBay. You can also order fruit-fly cultures on eBay to feed the young nymphs, but you should only keep a few in separate jars to raise, as they will often eat eachother for the slightest transgression.
