Stellenbosch University custodians of freedom flag

One of the South African flags that heralded the birth of democracy in South Africa was handed over to Stellenbosch University (SU) for custodianship on Monday.

The flag -- one of four that was suspended from Oryx helicopters of the South African Air Force for the flypast during the inauguration of Mr Nelson Mandela as President of the RSA at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 10 May 1994 -- bears the signatures of Mr Mandela, Mr FW de Klerk, his predecessor, and Mr Thabo Mbeki, the then deputy president. Mr De Klerk attended the function held in the SU Museum.
